The Parenting Journey™

Families are the most important institution and the most valuable resource in a child's life. The Parenting Journey is a
program geared toward parents who have not had the kind of upbringing that serves as a source of strength and knowledge.
Parenting Journey I
The Parenting Journey I is designed for parents who want to learn more about themselves, their relationships, and the resources they need to
effectively parent their children. Over meals in a warm and nurturing environment, parents are supported and encouraged to care for themselves, and
each other, while participating in a series of experiential exercises and activities.
Parenting Journey II
This follow-up program builds on the basic philosophy of the Parenting Journey I, with a greater focus on creating a positive vision for the
future.
Groups are 12 weeks in length, and run for 2 hours each week. Childcare may be available for younger family members.
For information regarding ongoing groups, including groups conducted in Spanish, see Events & Programs.
Girlz II Women

Girlz II Women is an after-school program designed to help 5th - 8th grade girls flourish socially, emotionally, and academically. These years
can be perilous ones for girls. As they transition to adolescence, they too often lose their spunk, confidence, and self-esteem. Girlz II Women
engages girls in activities ranging from navigating an adventure ropes course to decoding media messages about what it means to be female in America.
Like all Family Center programs, Girlz II Women also strengthens participants' relationships with their families and community. A parent
advisory group helps shape the program, and the girls organize a monthly family night. Young women from high schools and Tufts University volunteer
with the program, serving as mentors for the younger girls.
For information on enrollment, see Events & Programs.
Family Fun Nights/Family Camp

Overstressed families sometimes have little time to play with each other. Three nights during the school year, usually during school breaks, and for
five weeks during the summer, The Family Center invites families to come in and have fun together. A meal is served, and then families can choose among
many different activities hosted throughout our building, including arts and crafts, music and dance, toddler play, ping-pong, and creative writing.
For information on upcoming Family Fun Nights and Family Camp, see Events & Programs.
Parenting In America

Immigrant families face many unique pressures. They are often cut off from family and friends and unable to fully integrate into their new communities due to
linguistic and cultural barriers. Parenting in America offers groups for immigrant families in their own languages that help these families counter
isolation, discover strengths, and develop strategies for meeting the challenges before them.
By meeting together, immigrant families not only counter isolation but also discover strengths and develop strategies for meeting the challenges before them.
For information on current groups, see Events & Programs.
Family-School Partnerships

The Family Center's Family-School Partnerships program operates in five public elementary schools in Cambridge. It is
based on the premise that students' social and emotional experiences influence their academic success. If a child is faltering in school, chances are
he or she is also facing difficulties with peers, at home, or in the neighborhood. By fostering collaborations among students, families, school staff,
and communities, the Family Center program integrates the social and emotional supports necessary for learning into the academic environment.
Transitions

This is a free parent-child group for domestic violence survivors, where mothers and their children meet together with other families. Here
families will learn about the effects of violence, how to heal together from the effects of violence, and how to strengthen parent-child relationships.
